Nomadic Thinkers Pty Ltd: Media Statement

November 2, 2016

One of the great achievements of startup culture is its ability to change the way people do things. The aim of Nomadic Thinkers is to take this operating model and use it in a social setting to disrupt the way male related social issues are being addressed. Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the public anger as a result of a Junkee article on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it has come across that we trivialise the significance of domestic violence and depression. We would like to express our apologies as this is not the case. Our intention is and has always been to highlight the seriousness and social costs of these issues, and take an immersive and proactive approach towards action. We acknowledge all of the fantastic work that is being done in this field, but look to these key facts when defining our purpose:

1. The #1 cause of death for Australian men aged 15-44 years is suicide (Man Up 2016)

2. On average, 1 in 8 men will have depression at some stage of their life (BeyondBlue 2016)

3. Domestic Violence is still trending at the same rates over the last 10 years with little improvement

(Cussen & Bryant 2015)

4. There are issues with men accessing tradition support services due to stigmatism and ingrained

culture (BeyondBlue 2013)

In recognition of all of the above, we believe that our space that combines mental, physical and social stimulation will be a catalyst for impact amongst the men of our community. Impact that is not reactive but also preventative. The reality is that our framework was always going to be a source of contention. However, we had hoped for constructive and meaningful conversations. Our Social Impact Framework white paper is our way of demonstrating to the public the genuine intentions of Nomadic Thinkers, see it at

We look forward to continuing this conversation on how we as a society can address these serious issues in a way that builds and grows.
